When China Eastern flight MU2331 from Xi’an arrived at Sanya Fenghaung International Airport in Hainan, a particularly impatient passenger decided to open an emergency exit, and in the process, deploy an emergency slide.

When questioned by authorities about why he opened the door, he responded: “to get off the plane quicker.” He claims he did not pay attention to the safety briefing at the beginning of the flight, and did not know to only use the emergency slide in case of emergency.

Aviation experts say the cost to repair and replace the opened cabin door and emergency slide is approximately RMB 100,000 (over $16,000).

Shanghai Apartment Building Teeters Precariously Into Next Door Neighbor

Posted: 11/25/2014 9:30 am

leaning building of pudongTwo newly constructed buildings in the Pudong area of Shanghai, nicknamed the “kissing buildings”, are threatening their occupants as one building leans precariously into the other.

The apartment buildings were first occupied by residents only two years ago. Yet foundation cracks can already be seen throughout the exterior of the leaning No. 17, which is located only inches away from its twin 15-story neighbor at their closest spot.

leaning building of pudongPudong was originally a swampy grassland that was largely undeveloped before the revitalization of China’s economy in the 1990s. In order to ensure a stable foundation, thousands of steel pillars dozens of meters long were driven into the earth.

However, Pudong’s highest skyscrapers already have long cracks in the sidewalks below them as critics claim the entire area is sinking.

Shanghai is also where a 13-story apartment building fell over completely intact, having become free from its foundation. One person was killed in the incident, but no residents were living in the building at the time.

TCM Authority Says East vs. West Medical Challenge “Meaningless”

Posted: 11/6/2014 12:51 pm

pulse takingAfter proponents of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) failed a challenge last month to test the effectiveness of TCM, a national authority on the subject has come out to say the challenge between eastern and western medicine is meaningless.

The Nanfang reported TCM practitioners claim they can tell if a woman is pregnant solely by taking their pulse, but one doctor was unable to do so when he tested five women.

A spokesperson for the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine said Chinese and Western medicine are different with equally different ways of diagnosis and treatment. At the same time, the two separate schools of medicine complement each other in a coordinated way that can provide the best possible benefit to the patient, he said.

The spokesperson stressed that the diagnosis procedure for TCM involves a total of four diagnostic methods, of which pulse taking is only one. The spokesperson also said the individuals that proposed the challenge show a superficial understanding of TCM, while the practitioners that accepted the challenge are demonstrating their lack of comprehension of TCM.

Claiming “Chinese medicine is a fake science,” popular Weibo personality Ah Bao specifically targeted the pulse-taking diagnosis method in a challenge by offering RMB 50,000 of his own money to anyone who could prove him wrong.

Chengdu TCM doctor Lu Jilai accepted the challenge, but was only able to identify a pregnant patient on his second try.

Watch: Guy Struggles for 10 Minutes to Back Out of Parking Spot

Posted: 10/22/2014 11:00 am

parking fail jiangyang jiangsuThere are bad drivers, really bad drivers, and bad drivers who don’t know how bad they are. While a driver in Jiangyang, Jiangsu named Chen may belong to any one of these categories, he also belongs to another category: a bad driver who just doesn’t care.

This isn’t to say that Chen doesn’t pay any attention to his driving, but rather that he does not care if he bumps into the car parked next to him, scratching the car’s doors and fenders. Ten times.

It took him approximately ten minutes to successfully back out of his parking space, including the collateral damage he caused to the car next to him.

Here’s the video of Chen’s valiant but ultimately flawed attempt to back his car out of the parking spot:

TCM Doctor Fails Round One of East Versus West Medical Battle

Posted: 10/20/2014 9:46 am

east west medical showdown pulse taking pregnancyA showdown between East and West kicked off with a rocky start for a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), who failed to properly diagnose a pregnant woman.

READ: Skeptic Offers Huge Reward to Debunk Traditional Chinese Medicine

Beijing burn doctor Ah Bao claimed that TCM is a “false science” and offered RMB 50,000 to anyone who could prove him wrong, as The Nanfang reported. Ah Bao specifically criticized the practice of taking a patient’s pulse and using it as a diagnostic tool, as some TCM doctors say they can do this to determine if a woman is pregnant. Ah Bao believes the practice gives inconsistent results, and challenged anyone to achieve an 80 percent success rate.

Beijing doctor of traditional Chinese medicine Yang Zhen accepted the challenge shortly after it was issued, but it was Chengdu TCM doctor Lu Jilai that went first only to reach the wrong answer.

east west medical showdown pulse taking pregnancyAs Caijing reports, Dr Lu checked the pulse of five women, but was only able to identify the pregnant woman on the second pass..

It seems as though this is just the beginning of the contest with more trials to come, but Dr Lu is already playing the part of a sore loser, saying:

In response to continual suspicion and provocation towards traditional Chinese medicine, I had originally thought that once I had stepped out to face the challenge that a large group of top-notch TCM doctors would also do the same. But despite this call to action, and looking back, there are only 50 ducks behind me.

Dr Lu also offers an excuse as to why he didn’t perform well:

The diagnosis made by Chinese traditional medicine requires the use of all senses (ie sight, smell, sound, etc) to fully make a proper diagnosis.

As per the terms of the challenge, Lu was blindfolded.

With the reward having swelled to RMB 100,000 due to other contributions, the contest continues.

Shenzhen Driver Taunts Police Online, Police Post His Arrest Online

Posted: 05/28/2014 2:38 pm

This is a great story – a fable, if you will – told entirely in Weibo posts.

weibo shenzhen police post Weibo is a place where people like to have fun. The Shenzhen Traffic Police are just like you and me: they share their love of GIFs while trying to admonish the dangerous activities they depict, and reply to funny questions with funny answers.

bmw no zuo no die Weibo user MrCharlesChen is a also a guy who likes fun. And that’s what he was having when he posted a picture to Weibo at midnight on May 25 of himself driving with a beer can in his hand. He asked:

weibo fable no zuo no die charleschen drinking and driving taunting police fail

MrCharlesChen
Is drinking and driving at the same time against the law? @Shenzhen Traffic Police Have you caught any “tigers” tonight? [coylaughing.emo]

Yes. The account he was asking was the Shenzhen Traffic Police.

And while the Shenzhen Traffic Police has a history of joking around, they didn’t do so this time. Instead, they sent a short, terse message:

Shenzhen Traffic Police:
Put the beer down, and drive safely!

Such a reply didn’t deter MrCharlesChen, who posted the reply:weibo fable no zuo no die charleschen drinking and driving taunting police fail

MrCharlesChen:
I’m going to open another one [elatedopenmouth.emo]

Netizens got in on the fun at this point. They combed through MrCharlesChen’s Weibo account, and found the following gem in his photo album from March 19, 2013:

weibo fable no zuo no die charleschen drinking and driving taunting police fail

MrCharlesChen:
These past few days, I ran through about twenty red lights before I was finally caught @粤B374CC How’s this license for you? The next time you see this license plate, you’ll know it’s me [openmouthlaughing.emo]

Another photo found in MrCharlesChen’s album showed he was unrepentant towards his lawnessness by posting a screenshot of the driving violations he had incurred:weibo fable no zuo no die charleschen drinking and driving taunting police fail

CharlesChen:
That’s fine, I still have six points (left on my license)

Sensing a change of merriment, MrCharlesChen changed his username to the very aptno zuo no die (classic)“, and deleted all the content in his Weibo account. Unperturbed, the Shenzhen traffic police said that they were going to find him all the same:

bmw no zuo no die

搞怪GIF图:
This guy changed his (username)

深圳交警:
(Despite) changing a username, we still have to investigate.

MrCharlesChen finally signaled that he had enough fun:

weibo fable no zuo no die charleschen drinking and driving taunting police fail

MrCharlesChen:
I was wrong. [tearspouringdown.emo] I am a stupid cunt.
[tearspouringdown.emo]

However, the fun continued for netizens and police as they collaborated to find more information on MrCharlesChen:

Mr Chen-Jun:
Going to help out this so-called fellow classmate of Shenzhen University to remain at the back of the class…

Shenzhen Traffic Police (reply):
Thank you very much (for your contributions), we have already made screenshots.

The Shenzhen Traffic Police found that long list of traffic violations MrCharlesChen had boasted about:

weibo fable no zuo no die charleschen drinking and driving taunting police fail

Shenzhen police put a stop to all the fun on May 26 by issuing a demand to MrCharlesChen to surrender himself at a traffic police station. And they did it by sending him a Weibo post:

weibo fable no zuo no die charleschen drinking and driving taunting police fail

(Car with license plate 粤B374CC has made 16 driving violations) Through an investigation, it has been determined that Weibo user @MrCharlesChen (who has changed his username many times, and deleted his entire account) is a suspect wanted in connection with driving violations related to a BMW X1 vehicle with the license plate 粤B374CC that was first registered on March 5, 2013. To date, this vehicle has accrued a total of 16 violations, ten of which occurred in Shenzhen (nine counts of illegal stopping, one time for speeding) and six other violations occurring out of province. At present, ten points have been deducted from your license, leaving only six points left. According to traffic regulations, please hand over your car for confiscation and inspection.

But netizens would do one better and perform a human flesh search that turned up MrCharlesChen’s real name, work unit, picture, and residential address.

Shenzhen Traffic police were very amenable with their ultimatum by issuing helpful reminders:

Shenzhen Traffic Police:
If you do not arrive by 2pm, we will come to your residence. If there is a need, we will ask for the help of the “Uncles” in CID (Criminal Investigation Department).

And with the clock ticking:

Shenzhen Traffic Police:
One hour left.

MrCharlesChen finally did turn himself in. And, the police celebrated it with everyone online by posting his arrest on Weibo:

weibo fable no zuo no die charleschen drinking and driving taunting police fail

weibo fable no zuo no die charleschen drinking and driving taunting police fail

And then they posted all of his personal credentials online:

weibo fable no zuo no die charleschen drinking and driving taunting police fail

Of course, they censored anything personal about him but that was irrelevant, as his identity was already made public by the human flesh search.

Later that day, MrCharlesChen was very ponderous with his first post to Weibo ever since deleting his entire Weibo account:

MrCharlesChen:
Cherish life, don’t drink and drive. Living is not easy, cherish what you have when you’ve got it.

Yes, it would be much more poetic if he didn’t plagarize most of it. Outside in the parking lot, Shehzhen Traffic Police finally saw the car that they’d only seen online:

weibo fable no zuo no die charleschen drinking and driving taunting police fail

But upon opening the trunk of the car, they found yet another familiar sight:

weibo fable no zuo no die charleschen drinking and driving taunting police fail

That’s right, MrCharlesChen had driven to the police station to surrender himself and his car with two cases of beer in the back. He does like that Harbin beer, we see.

The moral would be very clear at this part of the story, except that it isn’t over.

With all of this having happened back in the distant past, meaning Monday of this week, some netizens still had lingering doubts. So one user recently posted this question to Shenzhen Traffic Police:

weibo fable no zuo no die charleschen drinking and driving taunting police fail

chenruihang:
“Uncle” traffic police, I want to know if drinking (soda pop) in the passenger seat is against the law

Shenzhen Traffic Police:
That’s fine, enjoy your drink. (Just remember,) too much will adversely impact your health! Just remember to do better than that brother from tomorrow.

Uh, “tomorrow”? They mean “yesterday”, don’t they?

weibo fable no zuo no die charleschen drinking and driving taunting police fail

Shenzhen Traffic Police:
Sorry, we meant ‘yesterday’

So while this may have been a very simple moral of “stupid is as stupid does”, the true moral of this fable is Weibo itself: no one ever forgets anything online. Not your hideous shame, your regretful mistakes, and not any one of your speiling mistakes.

Media Backlash Against “Flip Kiss” Meme Means More Fail to Enjoy

Posted: 04/22/2014 3:29 pm

flip kiss stir fry internet meme stunt youth When we first brought to you news of the flip kiss (back when we over-zealously called it the “kiss stir fry”), we saw this internet meme as the perfect two second GIF that can be enjoyed by Chinese and Westerners alike.

Since then, however, the flip kiss has received a media backlash for being a danger to impressionable youth. Caijing has reported that injures sustained from the flip kiss include damages to cervical vertebrae. China.com published pictures of victims with head injuries along with warnings from police and fitness experts. Sina pleaded with the public, “Don’t put your life on the line as a way to show off your conjugal love!”

Still, that hasn’t had a deterrent upon those who want to show their love via the flip kiss. While some places are showing you step-by-step instructions on how to correctly perform it, we thought we would showcase all the instances of flip kissing gone wrong—as a way to deter impressionable young people who must copy social trends, of course.

Click here to see how the flip kiss is properly executed; otherwise, watch the gallery below consisting of people being dropped on their heads:
