Inner Mongolian man arrested on suspicion of airplane bomb hoax

Police in Dongguan have arrested a 26 year-old Inner Mongolian man on suspicion of causing the bomb hoax that saw five Shenzhen-bound flights grounded yesterday, the Yuexiu District Public Security Bureau has revealed on its microblog.

The unemployed man was seized after a raid on his home in Changping Village after it was discovered that the six hoax phone calls that caused the furore were coming from his home.

The flights, operated by China Eastern Airlines, Juneyao Airlines and Shenzhen Airlines were either postponed or forced to land after Shenzhen Airlines received multiple threats between 8 a.m. and 8:33 a.m., with flight ZH9866 departing from Nanjing and then returning to the city after taking off. Flight ZH9243, departing from Xi’an, was forced to land in the city of Guilin, while flight ZH9889 from Beijing was delayed, Shenzhen Daily reports.

This excellent post by Beijing Cream from earlier this week illustrates how China’s airports could do without more drama.
