The off-limits area for tomorrow's No Car Day in Guangzhou

China’s No Car Day falls on a Thursday this year.

From 7am through to 7pm tomorrow, private vehicles in Guangzhou will not be allowed to pass through the ‘green zone’, which covers the area between Jiefang and Cangbian Rd., from Zhongshan Rd. up to and including Dongfeng Rd. Expansive Shenzhen has said it will try to take part, but it looks like Guangzhou will take the lead.

Guangzhou is just one of 143 cities in China taking part in tomorrow’s activity. Volunteers will be stationed along the roads located throughout the car-free area, and New Express has written that GPS trackers embedded in all Guangzhou taxis will be used to make sure drivers stay clear of the city center. Spying on your staff, always a good way to keep up morale.

School and tourist buses, TV station and other media vehicles, ambulances, army and police cars and vehicles belonging to most state-owned agencies will be allowed through, but city officials have said that the goal is to keep up to 90% of those vehicles off the road for the day.
