Guangzhou pedestrians incredulous over crossing light that is only green for 1 second

The traffic lights of a crossing in Guangzhou’s Luogang District have drawn complaints from pedestrians as the green man only stays alight for 1 second. This makes it somewhat difficult for them to walk the 35 metres required to cross the road, Liaoning Satellite Television reported Tuesday.

The offending traffic light is at the intersection of Yonghe Boulevard and Tianyuan Road.

“This is unreasonable,” one resident told the TV station. Another said it was difficult to teach his son the rules of the road if faulty equipment was forcing him to break them.

The anchorman then explained that people are being force to cross the road “Chinese style,” i.e. illegally.

Authorities have promised to do something about it.

A blog post in Hidden Harmonies has caused a stir this week by claiming that the general public (not the government) was responsible for the lack of civility and morality in society. But in this case, crossing the road in a civilized manner is not an option.
