Video: Bus driver in Dongguan chows down while driving, draws scorn from netizens

This month has seen China introduce what have become known as the country’s “strictest ever traffic regulations.” These include crackdowns on running red lights, talking on the phone while driving, and jaywalking.

But the sudden rise to notoriety of a bus driver in Dongguan’s Chang’an Village has highlighted a driving offense that authorities have overlooked: Eating while driving, China News reports.

Footage of the driver controlling the steering wheel between his thighs while eating in Wusha Commuity was picked up by news organizations yesterday. Although there was some sympathy about the plight of bus drivers who seldom get the chance to have their lunch at a canteen or restaurant, journalists called for the driver to be punished heavily.

The last time a bus driver made headlines around the country, it was for all the right reasons. Now, at a time when drivers on public transport are expected to be leading by example, someone has given the profession a bad name again.
