Police give green-light to woman to body search bus passengers for lost mobile phone

Police allowed a woman in Guangzhou to conduct body searches on fellow bus passengers after her phone went missing, Sina News reports.

At around 2 p.m. yesterday, the woman, Miss Huang, noticed her phone missing when riding the 836 bus to the Nanfang Daily building. She asked the driver to stop and keep the doors closed. Within 10 minutes the police arrived and they ordered everybody to stay on the bus until they were searched.

Afterwards, passengers were ordered by police to wait outside the bus.

The men were searched by police and the women were searched by Huang herself. Huang said “sorry for the inconvenience,” when she finished her search of each woman.  Ultimately, the whole ordeal proved fruitless as the phone was never found.

According to Zhu Yongping of Guangdong Datong Law Firm, only police have the right to conduct body searches, but that obviously didn’t stop Huang.  Perhaps she just forgot her phone at home.

Why wouldn’t the police just search the people instead? Seems a little odd that they let this woman take the law into her own hands. Literally.

Well, she’s obviously a pretty confident, assertive person, if she had the driver stop the bus.

If she’s confident and assertive, that probably means she’s powerful. The original article mentioned that the bus was going in the direction of The Southern Metropolis Daily building, she she might be an employee of that very newspaper.
