Book launch: “I married Guangzhou”

On December 14, Guangzhou Daily reports, a ceremony was held for the launch of Guangzhou Through The Eyes Of Foreigners, a series of books which will feature photos taken by expats living and working in the city and their impressions of Guangzhou.

Sponsored by the Information Office of the Guangzhou municipal government and published by Guangzhou Press, the first book in the series can now be purchased at the Guangzhou Book Center in Tianhe, or Xinhua bookstores around the town.

The idea for the book took shape last year with the GZ Morning Post column Guangzhou Through Your Eyes, which encouraged foreigners in Guangzhou to chronicle their lives in the city through photographs and written contributions as part of publicity for the Asian Games. The popularity of the column led to the decision to select 65 entries to be published in book form, now entitled Glamorous City of Ram.

“Guangzhou is my husband,” said Rebecca Ridinger, a contributor to the book, quoted from her book launch speech by Guangzhou Daily, “I married him. I’ve tried many times to run home to America, but Guangzhou pulls me back every time.”

An English professor at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies who moved to Guangzhou 5 years ago, Ridinger describes herself as a foreign daughter-in-law of the city: “I came to Guangzhou, and have become a part of her history.”

Another contributor, Ata Mohammad Adnan from Bangladesh, a student of medicine at Sun Yat-sen University, has contributed photos ranging from the opening ceremony of last year’s Asian Games to touching moments captured on major streets and in small alleys. “Those enchanting alleys,” he writes, “those smiling old people and those energetic kids…all of them attracted my lens, and allowed me to know more about this city.”
