The explosion occurred in the polishing area of the workshop where preliminary findings suspect that dust is the cause of the explosion.

According to the official website of the Kunshan Zhongrong Metal Production Company, the company has a total of 450 workers who are tasked with electroplating alloy wheel hubs.

The company is said to be a supplier for US auto manufacturer General Motors. Its location consists of 50,000 square meters of factory space, and was established in 1998.

The force of the explosion was powerful enough to cause serious damage to the factory. With one exterior wall collapsed, the blast has punctured two holes through the middle of the workshop wall while other areas are so severely damaged that only steel reinforcement bars remain. In a 50 meter diameter of the blast, shattered glass can be seen everywhere.

Xinhua reports that Kunshan government representatives have stated two company personnel have been detained due to the explosion.

The cause of the explosion still under investigation.

Five burn experts from Shanghai Ruijin Hospital have gone to Kunshan to lend support and expertise.

Explosion On Shenzhen Metro Line 4 Caused by External Smartphone Battery

Posted: 05/8/2014 4:20 pm

A subway train had to stop suddenly and passengers evacuated after a fire broke out at the rear of a train on Line 4 of the Shenzhen Metro, reports the Shenzhen Evening Report.

The incident occurred at 11:33am, and suspended subway service from Lianhua North Station to Futian Checkpoint, affecting transfer stations along Lines 1, 2 and 3.

A source with the firefighters on the scene confirmed the fire as the result of an explosion originating from a external battery charger for a cell phone.

No injuries were reported. Trains resumed normal operations as of 12:24pm.

Cheap aftermarket batteries seem like a bargain in comparison to the high cost of smartphones that keep rolling out with new models every year. However, the savings may be hazardous as shown on numerous occasions.

An iPhone 5 user in Thailand said his phone exploded while taking a call. Kirsten Zastrow reported the Anker replacement battery in her Nexus S phone exploded when recharging it at night. Wu Jiantong fell into a coma after being shocked by his iPhone4, while Ma Ailun complained she received an electric shock when taking a call while her phone was charging.

Always answer when opportunity knocks, but use caution when receiving incoming calls.

Truck carrying 30 barrels of engine oil bursts into flames in Shenzhen

Posted: 08/27/2012 8:08 pm

A truck fully loaded with engine oil burst into flames in Shenzhen around 3pm last Thursday, according to the Southern Metropolis Daily, which said nobody was injured thanks to quick thinking from the driver.

The truck ignited by itself as the tires overheated, according to the driver named Mr. Chen.  He tried to douse the flames using mineral water on hand, but it was no use. Eventually the flames grew, igniting the 30 barrels of engine oil he was transporting.  Giving up, he quickly detached the front of the truck with his cargo, sparing himself and his truck.

The driver was unfamiliar with the area and tried to call police, but it took 30 minutes before they and the fire department arrived.  Much of the engine oil flowed onto the Taishan Seaside Highway (Taishan Yanhai Gaosu), causing a major traffic jam.  Firefighters were able to finally douse the flames after about an hour.

Cars were finally able to drive through that section of highway around 6pm, three full hours after the fire broke out.

Fortunately, nobody was hurt.
